Boro- Timeworn textiles of Japan
Boro is a method of hand-sewn, repeated repairs that use sashiko – a running stitch, ideally the size of a grain of rice – to beautifully preserve and recycle fabric.'
The textiles in Boro – Timeworn Textiles of Japan are drawn from the substantial collection of New Zealand artist Pip Steel. The exhibition features a variety of boro methods and a range of different textiles, from futon covers and oshi-e, 19th century silk dolls, to momohiki, garments worn by farmers and workers, noragi, work jackets and maekake, work aprons, to tabi, Japanese socks and tebukuro, mittens. There are also examples of furoshiki, traditional wrapping, zokins (or zoukins), dusting cloths, mitsuami, traditional braided rope, komebukuro, rice bags, sake straining bags, iwai-bandori and stunning fabric sample books called shima-cho.

Creating Connections exhibition
Artists: Anna Hicks, Anna Prussing, Catherine Croucher, Gael O‘Donnell, Jill Bowman, Katherine Morrison, Marilyn Daly and Philippa Doyle
When we work together, we call ourselves Les Grandes Dames – a whimsical expression of the many years of art practice we collectively share.
We are eight artists with varied creative practices who came together because of our shared interest in textiles. We all wanted to develop as artists, and honest but encouraging critique from other group members has allowed us all to progress our work in varied ways.
Creating Connections is at the heart of our art practice: connection with our whanau and community; connection with our homeland and the world around us; connection with our past and future; connection with our art and, through that, connection with our audience. Connecting can be painful but being disconnected is equally painful and challenging. The need to connect is fundamentally human.

Artists Talk (Creating Connections Exhibit)
Please join Les Grandes Dames on a facilitated tour of the Creating Connections exhibition. They will discuss their own work and describe some of the techniques they used to make these textiles.

Mindless Meander -Anna Hicks (Creating Connections Exhbit)

Finishing techniques will be demonstrated on how to turn your quilt into a 3D wall hanging or a useful pouch.
All materials will be provided but feel free to bring scraps of fabric you want to use.
Places are limited so bookings are essential.

Honeycomb Spin
Tutor: Anna Hicks
The ever popular hexagon has had a contemporary spin. Instead of hand piecing, learn an easy method to applique the hexagons which will be held in place with a spiral of machine quilting.
This class includes preparing the hexagons (some prep work is required), laying out with a focus on colour, value and movement, spiral quilting and finishing a wall hanging with a hidden facing and hanging sleeve.
Students can choose to start a large wall hanging size (70 x 100cm), a single small hanging (30 x 40cm) or a series of 3 small panels.
1-day class: 6 - 8 hours teaching time.
Detailed info sheet will be sent out for the preparation of hexagons before class.
Members $65, non-members $75
Class kit: Colour printed notes $6 each

Protest Stitching (Creating Connections Exhibit)
Facilitated by Katherine Morrison and Philippa Doyle
Textiles have been used in protests for centuries and today we feel there’s plenty to protest about! Come and learn a technique for hand stitching onto wool or linen to express your protest thoughts. Katherine and Philippa will show you how to embroider with embroidery threads to get your ideas across. Techniques for marking designs, sewing and washing will be taught. You will come away with a new technique, new ideas and hopefully inspiration!
All materials will be provided but feel free to bring pieces that you are working on. Places are limited so bookings are essential. To book please e-mail: artscentre@wcc.govt.nz
