Boro- Timeworn textiles of Japan

Boro is a method of hand-sewn, repeated repairs that use sashiko – a running stitch, ideally the size of a grain of rice – to beautifully preserve and recycle fabric.'

The textiles in Boro – Timeworn Textiles of Japan are drawn from the substantial collection of New Zealand artist Pip Steel. The exhibition features a variety of boro methods and a range of different textiles, from futon covers and oshi-e, 19th century silk dolls, to momohiki, garments worn by farmers and workers, noragi, work jackets and maekake, work aprons, to tabi, Japanese socks and tebukuro, mittens. There are also examples of furoshiki, traditional wrapping, zokins (or zoukins), dusting cloths, mitsuami, traditional braided rope, komebukuro, rice bags, sake straining bags, iwai-bandori and stunning fabric sample books called shima-cho.

Kaka-aku
Sept

to 2 Nov

Kaka-aku

Kaka-aku is an exhibition featuring Tehani Ngapare Rau-Te-Tara Buchanan (Ngāti Rupe Makea, Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Mitiaro, Mangaia), Rosalie Koko (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, Olosega), Bobby Luke (Ngāti Ruanui, Taranaki) and Vince Ropitini (Taranaki, Ngāruahinerangi, Whakatōhea).

Through the forms of kākahu, tīvaevae and moving image, these artists honour the customary ways of their tūpuna while also offering invigorating adaptations that revitalise past traditions. In textile art, innovation is vital. Buchanan's use of the Japanese concept ofkintsugi reflects the beauty in imperfection and incompletion, while Koko's muka embroidery and Sāmoan motifs draw her cultures together. Luke's selection of garments and moving image works draw heavily on his matriarchal influences and Taranakitanga. Ropitini places importance on kaupapa Māori and mātauranga Māori led design while working with fashion to reconnect with his heritage. The artistic practices of kākahu and tīvaevae may seem diametrically opposed, but they both have roots in kaka-aku, literally meaning textile fibre

Kaka-aku considers the role that ringatoi Māori and Moana have to play in not only upholding, but advancing our art forms.

Honeycomb Spin -POSTPONED

Unfortunately due to last minute scheduling issues this class needs to be postponed. If you had your name down for this one we will reach out with details when it’s re-scheduled so you get first dibs

Tutor: Anna Hicks

The ever popular hexagon has had a contemporary spin. Instead of hand piecing, learn an easy method to applique the hexagons which will be held in place with a spiral of machine quilting.

This class includes preparing the hexagons (some prep work is required), laying out with a focus on colour, value and movement, spiral quilting and finishing a wall hanging with a hidden facing and hanging sleeve.

Students can choose to start a large wall hanging size (70 x 100cm), a single small hanging (30 x 40cm) or a series of 3 small panels.

1-day class: 6 - 8 hours teaching time.

Detailed info sheet will be sent out for the preparation of hexagons before class.

Members $65, non-members $75
