Sue Swann’s embroidery
Sue is a creative artist with an extensive range of embroidery techniques. Judi asked her to speak to the theme of ‘Eye candy’ and she showed us samples of the wonderful things that she has made. Sue started embroidering when in her 20s, mainly cross-stitch and tapestry. Started taking classes in in order to learn a variety of stitching techniques. Anne-Marie Moorehead’s class taught her stump work (raised embroidery). Sue wanted to design her own pieces and did a City and Guilds course in hand embroidery through Nancys. Her four designs included a panel piece based on fossilised fish / Aboriginal rock art, made of silk paper which she embroidered over. The other three pieces were a ‘personal object’ which was based on a chinese needle case, a lampshade and a large tryptic. She started to explore embroidering silk paper in many different forms.
Sue taught a class at Symposium 2022. She dyes the silk paper backgrounds and draws on the bird motifs of the SW of US.
Sue was invited to teach counted thread work at Nancys and used this technique to make pictures of windmills and Don Quixote using black thread on white fabric.
She has been through an Italian phase and an Indian phase.
She used Silk thread painting to make .pictures based on art by Portuguese artists.
We also had a fantastic show and tell with some peer pressure from the crowd for exhibition entries.
