Shakespeare in the city

Dawn Sanders and Assistant Charlotte from the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand (SCGNZ) were our speakers for our August meeting.

This year is the 30th anniversary of the New Zealand embroiderers creation off our wall-hangings for the Globe Theatre in London, England. The hangings are a combination of hand and machine embroidery, dye-work and appliqué and are on display currently. Te Papa owns the full-size cartoons for them.

SCGNZ are involved in a huge amount of events, from planning Shakespeare in the park events, running performing and designing competitions with students across New Zealand and arranging visits and internships at the Globe Theatre.

Dawn and Charlotte had brought along some stunning award winning costumes designed by high school students that were entered into the SCGNZ annual design competition. Some are also displayed in the Globe theatre in London, which can be viewed online in the Memory of Light Gallery
